El Peñol is a charming municipality located in eastern Antioquia, just 62 kilometers from Medellín. Originally founded in the 18th century, El Peñol experienced one of the most significant processes of community reconstruction in Colombia. In the 1970s, its town center was flooded to make way for the construction of the hydroelectric dam, one of the most important projects in the country. However, far from disappearing, the community of El Peñol re-emerged with strength and managed to build a new town with identity, memory, and a sense of belonging. Today, the replica of the old town, with its church and central plaza, is one of the main tourist attractions, a symbol of resistance and historical memory.
